The Pros and Cons of Wireless vs. Wired Security Systems

Discover Which System Is Right for You

If you've been looking for the best security system for your Jacksonville, FL, home, you've undoubtedly run across two types: wired and wireless. As the name implies, the difference lies in the kind of connection. This connection, however, significantly affects the features and benefits these two security solutions provide.

Here, we'll explore the pros and cons of wireless vs. wired security systems and which one may be right for you.

Wireless vs. Wired Security Systems

Both wired and wireless systems use strategically installed motion and glass break sensors to detect movement, whether a person, door, or window. When a sensor is triggered, it sends an alert to your smartphone, a professional monitoring station, or a central control panel that triggers an alarm.

A wireless security system uses radio waves to communicate between the sensors, security cameras, and control panels. A wired home security system uses cables and wires to communicate between the various equipment.

The Pros of a Wireless Security System

  • Easier to Install and Remove: Because there are no bulky wires to attach, these systems are easier to install. However, it's best to work with professionals to ensure the correct placement of sensors and cameras and integration with other automated systems. These security systems are also much easier to move to a new dwelling.
  • Enhanced Integration: Because these systems connect to the Wi-Fi network, it's easier to integrate them with other smart connected devices.
  • Remote Access: Remote access via the network enables two-way communication and the ability to view live video from anywhere.

The Cons of a Wireless Security System

  • More Vulnerable: Because these systems run on the home network, it's easier for hackers to break into. Proper precautions, however, can limit this concern. Wi-Fi can also experience signal interference from other devices, such as baby monitors or structures. If the internet goes down, the system stops recording.
  • Battery Life: Batteries are responsible for powering some wireless security cameras. These cameras tend to limit recording to when they detect motion.

The Pros of a Wired Security System

  • Ideal for Larger Properties: Wired systems are not constrained by range limitations brought on by wireless cameras and sensors.
  • Harder to Hack: This system communicates through wires, which means someone attempting interference would need to be onsite.

The Cons of a Wired Security System

  • Not Portable: These systems are typically not portable, so your security system will most likely stay behind if you move.
  • Susceptible to Power Outages: Most contain a backup battery system to limit this possible disruption.

Which System Is Right for You?

Both systems have their pros and cons. Generally, a wired system is considered more reliable due to its direct connections. It's also considered better for larger, expansive properties. On the other hand, a wireless system more readily integrates with other smart technologies and offers remote access.
